I have been considering purchasing a chest rig for quite some time to replace the lighter weight plate carrier I have been using lately. After seeing a few pictures of this particular chest rig in use, I was sold on it. This chest rig is a copy of the Eagle Industries Universal Chest rig. I purchased it gently used for $60, but it can be had brand new from Pantac for $78, found here: www.pantacgear.com/pantac.gear/product-do-view-productid-301.html. I purchased the tan version, but they also come in black, multicam, olive drab, and coyote brown.
Although this rig lacks a back to it, it still has plenty of space for magazines, speed loaders, radios, and even pistols. Across the front, the 4 main pouches can hold up to 8 M4 magazines, the two outer most of the 4 featuring retainer straps. Directly mounted to the middle two of these pouches are 4 pistol magazine pouches, which also feature retainer straps to keep your mags or speed loaders from falling out of the relatively shallow pouches. There are two pouches on both ends that sit directly to your sides while wearing it that are slightly longer and can accommodate various items such as radios or small water containers. These pouches can even be used as pistol holsters, and are large enough to fit pistols with tac lights attached depending on the model. Retainer straps on these pouches keep your radios, pistols, etc in place firmly. Finally, there is a large pouch hidden behind the rifle mag pouches that can be used to hold thinner objects such as maps.
Featuring padded shoulder straps, this rig is fairly comfortable even when fully loaded down with magazines, a pistol, and a water bottle. It is made from 1000D Cordura and is very well made. The straps are very strong and I have no fear of the buckles failing for any reason. All straps are completely adjustable to accommodate many different sizes of players, and one thing I found nice about it is that the straps can be tightened a lot, allowing it to fit in the thinnest of players.
I have yet to field this rig, but I have a feeling it will work perfectly for my play style. All of the pouches are well made and it is very easy to remove the contents quickly. I would definitely recommend this rig to anyone looking for a chest rig that is simple, high quality, lightweight and comfortable. While not customizable like MOLLE chest rigs, this still has plenty of room for the essentials.
